BROKEN ANGEL: REVIEW THREE

CAITLYN
As Mr. Brouwer reveals only partial clues to the nature of the ideologies in conflict in his book, so does he draw us into the mystery of Caitlyn. We know from the beginning that she is different; that her father believes he should have destroyed her at birth. Early on we guess what the deformity will become. What we do not know until the end is what Caitlyn will become.
We are entangled in the struggle between Bar Elohim, a blasphemy of the name of God, and the Clan, revealed as infiltrators of the Appalachian society. We know early on that the Clan works like an Underground Railroad, helping citizens of Appalachia escape to the Outside. This keeps the secret of Caitlyn’s existence dangling in front of us while we follow the maze of intrigue that inevitably grows up around a suppressive regime.
The title of the book would lead us to conclude that Caitlyn will become an angel of one kind or another. And the unfolding of the plot hints that she will somehow be the savior of the Clan. To learn how that takes place, leaves us with a larger question. Just who and what is Caitlyn? To give that information away in this review would be to give away the ending and I will stop short of that.
However, I do hope that Mr. Brouwer will write a sequel to Broken Angel in which he allows us to know Caitlyn in her adulthood and to delve more deeply into the social and political mores of Outside.
This is the final review of Broken Angel and I will end with a “Thank You” for a book that intrigues and keeps the reader interested from opening to closing.
